“Exiled Iranian Prince Sparks Anti-Government Protests”

The son of Iran’s former shah has emerged as a key figure inspiring protesters in the largest anti-government demonstrations in years, despite residing outside Iran since the late 1970s. Reza Pahlavi, depicted negatively by Iranian state media, is utilizing social media and Farsi-language news outlets like Iran International to amplify his messages supporting protests and denouncing repression. He recently appealed to U.S. President Donald Trump for intervention to assist Iranian demonstrators.

Pahlavi clarified in a recent CBS News interview his stance on the ongoing protests in Iran and his role as a vocal advocate for change. While he acknowledged the risks involved in challenging the regime, he emphasized the people’s call for external support to achieve a successful uprising. He also reiterated his commitment to a secular, democratic Iran as the ultimate goal.

Although Pahlavi’s level of public backing within Iran remains uncertain, some protesters have shown solidarity through social media videos, chanting phrases like “Long live the shah.” The dissent in Iran encompasses various demands, including political reform, economic stability, and an end to the prevailing theocratic rule under Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

Pahlavi, who was appointed crown prince in his youth, left Iran during the tumultuous period of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Despite his exile, he has persistently advocated for a transition towards a democratic system in Iran, emphasizing the importance of the people’s choice in determining the country’s future leadership. Pahlavi’s efforts to promote change have resonated with some Iranians, both within the country and in the diaspora, but have faced challenges in gaining substantial international backing.
