“Deadly Landslide Strikes Java: 8 Killed, 82 Missing”

A landslide, triggered by heavy rains before dawn on Java, Indonesia’s main island, resulted in the deaths of eight individuals and the disappearance of 82 others. Rescuers faced challenges navigating the thick mud to search for survivors in Pasir Langu village, West Bandung district, West Java province. The overflowing rivers, caused by days of relentless rainfall, destroyed 34 houses as mud, rocks, and trees cascaded down the mountainside.

Efforts were underway to locate the 82 missing residents buried under the debris, with 24 individuals managing to escape the disaster. The National Disaster Management Agency’s spokesperson, Abdul Muhari, reported that eight bodies were recovered from the severely affected Pasir Kuning settlement after the landslide struck at 3 a.m.

Television broadcasts showed the frantic efforts of workers and locals digging through the mud in Pasir Langu, which was entirely covered in mud, rocks, and uprooted trees. Teten Ali Mungku Engkun, the head of West Java’s Disaster Management Office, noted the challenges posed by the unstable soil and continued heavy rains in the ongoing search and rescue operations.

Evacuations were carried out for families residing within 100 meters of the landslide zone amid concerns of potential further slope failures. Authorities emphasized the importance of vigilance for residents in landslide-prone areas, advising immediate evacuation upon hearing unusual sounds, witnessing soil movements, or sensing unsafe conditions.

Indonesia has experienced previous devastating floods and landslides, with Sumatra facing catastrophic incidents in December that claimed the lives of over 1,200 individuals and injured more than 7,000, as reported by the National Disaster Management Agency. The country, with its diverse geography, often encounters seasonal rains and high tides from October to April, leading to frequent flooding and landslides, especially in mountainous regions and flood-prone areas.

In a similar event last January, Central Java province witnessed over 20 casualties due to flooding and landslides following heavy rainfall. The recurring natural disasters highlight the need for proactive measures and swift response strategies in Indonesia.
