A local community is organizing a workshop to address ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s request for regulatory “flexibility” concerning air and noise pollution standards. The steel company has submitted an application to the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks seeking permission to exceed Ontario’s regulations on noise and contaminants. Interested individuals have until March 12 to provide feedback through the Environmental Registry of Ontario.
In response, Citizens Against Pollution, a community group, will host an in-person workshop on Tuesday to assist the public in submitting their comments. The workshop will take place at the City Lounge on the second floor of Hamilton Stadium, starting at 6 p.m.
ArcelorMittal Dofasco’s application seeks operational flexibility for various manufacturing processes including coke, iron and steel production, rolling, coating lines, finishing, and boilers. The emissions from these operations include various substances such as total suspended particulate, benzo[a]pyrene, benzene, manganese, sulphur dioxide, and noise.
Furthermore, the Ward 4 councillor’s office, in collaboration with the Canadian Environmental Law Association (CELA), will host a discussion on air and noise pollution at the Hamilton Museum of Steam and Technology on Monday evening. Titled “Healthy Yards — Conversations about Air and Noise Pollution,” the event will feature presentations from CELA, Environment Hamilton, local resident Jochen Bezner, and McMaster University Prof. Sarah Styler discussing recent advocacy efforts and research on soot. The presentations will also be live-streamed on YouTube.
