“Carney Stands Firm: Canada Thrives on Its Own Values”

In a direct response to recent remarks made by U.S. President Donald Trump, Prime Minister Mark Carney emphasized the strength and independence of Canada during his address at the Liberal cabinet meeting in Quebec City. Carney rejected Trump’s assertion that “Canada lives because of the United States,” asserting that Canada thrives because of its Canadian identity and values.

Carney’s speech highlighted the importance of protecting Canadian values such as inclusivity and fairness in the face of global challenges. He emphasized the need for Canada to serve as a beacon of democracy and rights protection in a time of democratic decline and increasing barriers.

Looking ahead to the upcoming parliamentary session, Carney reiterated his commitments to safeguard services like child care, dental care, and pharmacare, and to advocate for the rights of vulnerable groups within Canadian society. He underscored the necessity of defending these values and expressed confidence in Canadians’ willingness to uphold them.

Drawing on historical references, Carney praised the cooperation that emerged from past conflicts and recognized the contributions of former prime ministers in shaping Canada’s progress. He outlined his priorities for the new parliamentary session, including enhancing economic collaboration with provinces, expanding international trade agreements, and investing in defense and artificial intelligence.

In response to Carney’s speech, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre urged for tangible results, emphasizing the need to fulfill promises and unlock Canada’s economic potential. Poilievre acknowledged the importance of the longstanding trade and security partnership with the U.S. while advocating for resource development and pipeline approvals.

The cabinet retreat at the Citadelle in Quebec City focused on economic, affordability, and security matters, with ministers discussing progress on their respective mandates. The meetings also addressed the need for diversifying trade partnerships and maintaining Canada’s economic resilience in the face of global challenges.
