Astronaut Jeremy Hansen, known for his recent voyage around the moon in April, has decided to retire from the Canadian Space Agency’s astronaut corps. The agency made the announcement today through a press release, acknowledging Hansen’s significant contributions to Canada’s space program.
In his own words shared on social media, Hansen revealed his plans to transition into new professional opportunities starting September 2026 while remaining a reservist with the Royal Canadian Air Force. Following a distinguished career spanning 32 years in the military and 17 years as a CSA astronaut, including the remarkable Artemis II mission, Hansen expressed his continued dedication to supporting Canada’s space endeavors.
Recruited in 2009 alongside David Saint-Jacques, Hansen completed astronaut candidate training in 2011 and has since been actively involved in NASA mission control and intensive preparations for missions like Artemis II.
Reflecting on his experience during the Artemis II mission, Hansen expressed his enjoyment of various aspects, highlighting the awe-inspiring visuals and physical sensations of space travel. However, he emphasized that the human experience was the most profound aspect of his journey.
Minister Melanie Joly praised Hansen’s historic achievement as the first Canadian to participate in a lunar mission, emphasizing how his accomplishments have not only advanced Canada’s role in space exploration but also inspired generations of young Canadians.
After Hansen’s retirement, the CSA will have three active astronauts: David Saint-Jacques, Joshua Kutryk, and Jenni Gibbons. Gibbons, who played a crucial role in mission control during Artemis II, continues her work at NASA, while Kutryk is set to join Crew-13 on a mission to the International Space Station in September.
In closing his retirement announcement, Hansen expressed gratitude to the Canadian Armed Forces, CSA, NASA, international partners, and his family, thanking all Canadians for their belief in the country’s potential for high achievements.
