A member of the Canadian Armed Forces passed away during a deployment in Latvia, as confirmed by the Department of National Defence on Friday. Gunner Sebastian Halmagean, hailing from Hamilton, lost his life near Riga, Latvia. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation. The Department stated that there is currently no elevated threat to the safety of deployed personnel.
Details regarding Halmagean’s cause of death have not been disclosed. He had been serving in the Canadian Armed Forces for nearly three years and was stationed at the 5th Canadian Division Support Base Gagetown in Oromocto, N.B. This deployment to Latvia was his first mission abroad. The Canadian Forces are part of Operation Reassurance, the CAF’s primary overseas operation.
General Jennie Carignan, chief of the defence staff, expressed condolences on behalf of the Canadian Armed Forces, emphasizing the loss felt by all members. Prime Minister Mark Carney also shared his sorrow over Halmagean’s passing, extending sympathies to his family and comrades. The local Liberal MP, David Myles, highlighted the sacrifices made by military personnel in the community.
