Canada’s Olympic women’s hockey team will be announced on Friday by Hockey Canada and the Canadian Olympic Committee, just before their tournament opener against Finland on Feb. 5. The Canadian team, which secured gold in Beijing in 2022, is now gearing up for the Winter Games in Italy where they face a tough challenge against the skilled American team.
During the recent four-game Rivalry Series, the American squad dominated, defeating Canada 24-7. The U.S. team, led by captain Hilary Knight and top scorer Kendall Coyne Schofield, boasts a talented roster including rising stars like Caroline Harvey, Abbey Murphy, and Laila Edwards. Canadian assistant captain Blayre Turnbull acknowledged the team’s shortcomings in the Rivalry Series but remains optimistic about their chances at the Olympics.
Head coach Troy Ryan expressed confidence in the team’s ability to bounce back, emphasizing the importance of building strong habits and teamwork. The Canadian women’s hockey team will be competing in Group A alongside the United States, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Finland, while Group B includes Germany, Japan, Italy, France, and Sweden.
Unlike previous years of centralized training, this year’s team preparation involved multiple training camps and limited game time together. The PWHL platform has provided players like Daryl Watts, Sophie Jaques, and Kati Tabin the opportunity to showcase their skills and earn consideration for the national team.
In terms of the roster composition, familiar faces such as Marie-Philip Poulin, Sarah Fillier, and Turnbull are expected to secure spots in the forward line-up. Players like Emma Maltais and Watts are set to play crucial roles in the upcoming Olympics. The defensive line-up will see returning players from the 2022 team alongside new talents like Chloe Primerano and Micah Zandee-Hart.
The battle for the third goaltending spot remains open between Ève Gascon and Kayle Osborne, with both players showcasing their abilities in the lead-up to the Games. The final roster announcement is highly anticipated, with Canadian fans eager to see which players will represent the nation in Italy.
