“Blayre Turnbull: The Unsung Leader of Team Canada”

In a rink in Etobicoke, Ont., where Team Canada held its second Olympic training camp last fall, head coach Troy Ryan approached Blayre Turnbull on the ice. Ryan expressed his dissatisfaction with the team’s passing during practice that day and sought confirmation from his long-time assistant captain, Blayre Turnbull. Her agreement reassured Ryan, allowing him to leave with confidence in his coaching decisions.

Blayre Turnbull, a trusted member of the team for over a decade, serves as a link between the coaching staff and players, possessing a strategic mindset akin to a coach. While not the most flamboyant player or the one scoring crucial goals, Turnbull is relied upon heavily by the Canadian staff during critical moments in significant games for her defensive prowess.

Off the ice, Turnbull holds immense importance within the Canadian program as she prepares for her third Olympics in Italy this February. Her leadership qualities and dedication are admired by teammates and coaches, with Canadian captain Marie-Philip Poulin acknowledging Turnbull’s significant role within the team.

Growing up in Stellarton, N.S., Turnbull’s upbringing in a town built on coal mining instilled in her a resilient and determined approach to hockey and life. From playing with boys to competing against top athletes, Turnbull’s grit, instilled by her upbringing, has been a driving force behind her success as an athlete.

Having faced setbacks and challenges, Turnbull’s journey back to the Canadian team in 2015-16 showcased her resilience and determination. Known for her relentless play on Canada’s penalty kill, Turnbull’s competitive spirit and dedication to the team have earned her a reputation as a formidable opponent on the ice.

Turnbull’s connection with coach Troy Ryan, stemming from their shared Nova Scotia roots, highlights their mutual understanding and bond forged through similar life experiences. Representing a small community, both Turnbull and Ryan embody the pride and hard work associated with their East Coast upbringing.

Embracing her leadership role, Turnbull draws inspiration from fellow team leaders and continues to evolve as a player, understanding the value she brings beyond statistical measures. Ryan envisions a coaching future for Turnbull, seeing her as a natural fit for a coaching role, potentially alongside him in a coaching capacity.

Turnbull’s journey and impact will be on display as her Sceptres host the Seattle Torrent at the TD Coliseum in Hamilton, Ont. The game, scheduled for Saturday at 2 p.m. ET, can be watched on CBC and CBC Gem.
