“Alberta Separatists Push for Independence as Edmonton Joins Movement”

Alberta separatists expanded their initiative to Edmonton on Tuesday, hosting a signing event at a hotel in the west end to gather signatures for a petition advocating for a referendum on Alberta’s secession from Canada. Town hall gatherings have been organized throughout the province to secure nearly 178,000 signatures within the coming months.

Brian Copping, who relocated from Ontario to Edmonton four decades ago, expressed his support at the signing event. While he considered his move to Alberta the best decision he ever made, he highlighted perceived injustices towards western provinces and asserted that pursuing independence is the necessary course of action. Copping emphasized the need for change, stating that Alberta does not benefit from its current association with Canada.

Similarly, Edmonton resident Serge Chamberland echoed Copping’s sentiments, expressing fatigue over what he perceives as favoritism towards eastern regions and neglect towards the west. He emphasized the obstruction he believes Alberta faces from the federal government in various aspects, including the economy.

Alanna Mazekulua articulated her motivation for supporting the separatist movement, citing concerns about the cost of living. She criticized the government for cornering Albertans into considering secession as the only viable option, emphasizing the desire for her children to have the opportunity to own a home without financial constraints.

Political scientist Lisa Young from the University of Calgary noted a solid foundation of separatist support in Alberta, ranging from 20% to a maximum of 30% of survey respondents favoring Alberta’s independence. Young highlighted the federal government’s responsiveness to the movement, citing policy adjustments related to greenhouse gas emissions and discussions concerning a potential pipeline to British Columbia.

Jeffery Rath, representing the Stay Free Alberta movement, expressed confidence in the independence campaign’s progress, affirming that they are approaching their target of one million signatures. Rath emphasized the significant message this collective action sends to Alberta’s political leadership, underscoring the momentum of the movement.
