Macklemore is embarking on a solo tour following his removal as an opening act for Ed Sheeran’s U.S. tour leg. All proceeds from these concerts will be directed towards supporting Palestinian causes.
The decision to drop Macklemore came after several American venue owners threatened to cancel Sheeran’s shows if the rapper continued as the opening act. Macklemore, known for his pro-Palestinian stance, has been vocal about his support for Palestinians on various platforms over the years.
In response to the situation, Macklemore emphasized the broader implications, stating that the influence of the wealthy elite in determining who can speak on stage is concerning. With his newfound availability, the rapper announced upcoming performances in Dublin, Paris, and London under the banner of the Free Palestine Tour, featuring Macklemore “and friends,” with additional U.S. dates to be revealed.
The shows are planned to benefit Palestinian aid organizations, including Gaza Soup Kitchen, Palestinian Youth Movement, Jewish Voice for Peace, and UNRWA USA. Macklemore has reached out to fellow artists who have used their platforms to stand in solidarity with Palestinians, highlighting the importance of speaking out even when faced with consequences.
The controversy began during Macklemore’s performances on Sheeran’s Loop Tour, where he voiced his support for Palestine, triggering backlash from Israeli advocacy groups. This led to calls for his removal from the tour, culminating in his official exit.
