The department emphasized that any instances of physical, mental, or cyber violence are treated seriously and thoroughly looked into, including the reported use of generative AI by students. Pending the investigation’s results, appropriate actions will be taken.
Generative AI technology has various applications, ranging from editing text and creating audio snippets to manipulating or fabricating images. Although the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary did not confirm the specific investigation at the school, they acknowledged receiving reports and foresee an increase in reports related to sexually altered images within their jurisdictions. Investigations involving individuals aged 12 to 17 are handled in accordance with the Youth Criminal Justice Act, with potential charges such as creating, possessing, accessing, and distributing child sexual exploitation material for youth involvement.
Not limited to Menihek High, the investigation extends beyond Labrador West. The RCMP’s Integrated Internet Child Exploitation Unit has encountered AI-generated content during their operations. The Department of Education is aware of similar incidents involving school-aged individuals in Labrador and the Avalon Peninsula region of Newfoundland. As these matters remain under police scrutiny, the department refrained from disclosing further details.
Jonathan Anderson, a computer engineering professor at Memorial University, highlighted the prevalence of generative AI on social platforms and the challenges in preventing misuse. Companies can implement restrictions, but total prevention remains elusive. Anderson emphasized the importance of companies implementing measures to deter the creation of inappropriate content. The responsibility also lies with parents and caregivers to educate children on responsible technology usage and the repercussions of online actions.
Child psychologist Janine Hubbard advised parents to familiarize themselves with AI technology, educate their children on media literacy, and promote critical thinking when consuming digital content. Hubbard emphasized the necessity of discussing the implications of altered images with children and guiding them on appropriate online behavior. If children encounter illegal image alterations, Hubbard recommended addressing the social implications and assisting them in reporting such incidents. She highlighted the potential confusion and violation experienced by youth affected by such activities, underscoring the need for parental support in navigating these challenges.
