A recent viral encounter with a grizzly bear and new research are emphasizing the importance of keeping dogs on a leash while hiking. A woman is potentially facing a fine of up to $25,000 for sharing a TikTok video in July that garnered millions of views. The video features a man using bear spray to deter a grizzly bear while a small off-leash dog comes between them and the woman filming.
The video showcases grizzly bear No. 142, a known female bear, peacefully walking along the Taylor Lake trail in Banff National Park without displaying any aggression. The woman behind the video is set to appear in court in Canmore later this month.
A recent peer-reviewed study titled “The Canine Conundrum: Is a Dog a Help or Hindrance in Bear Country?” delved into conflicts similar to those depicted in the video. The study examined 326 reported human-bear conflicts involving dogs from 1901 to 2023. It revealed that 54% of these conflicts were instigated by dogs, resulting in the deaths of five people and 56 dogs, with 170 people sustaining injuries.
Lana Ciarniello, a co-author of the study, highlighted that hiking in groups reduces the likelihood of negative bear encounters by 50%. However, the presence of a dog elevates the risk of such encounters due to the disruptive element dogs introduce to recreational activities.
The research study was prompted by a tragic incident in 2023 where two hikers and their dog were fatally attacked by a grizzly bear in Banff National Park. Such human-bear conflicts not only impact individuals directly involved but also have repercussions on the bears and the ecosystem.
Injuries were significantly higher for people with off-leash dogs, and more bear encounters occurred when dogs were off-leash. Ciarniello advocated for strict adherence to on-leash dog regulations in Canada’s national parks and suggested exploring dog restrictions in critical grizzly habitat areas.
Parks Canada wildlife experts recommended implementing “enhanced dog restrictions” in Banff National Park following the tragic incident in the Red Deer Valley. The report emphasized the importance of re-evaluating dog-related policies to mitigate the risks associated with dog-wildlife encounters.
The report underscored the need for compliance with leash regulations to prevent negative interactions between dogs and wildlife. It cautioned about the foreseeable increase in such encounters as park visitation rises. Yellowstone, Grand Teton, and Glacier national parks in the U.S. were cited as examples where dogs are not permitted on trails or in the backcountry.
Kim Titchener, founder of Bear Safety & More, advised dog owners to assess their pets’ behavior around wildlife before taking them into such environments. When encountering bears, Titchener recommended stepping off the trail, carrying bear spray, keeping dogs on-leash, and prioritizing safety over filming the encounter.
