“Ukraine Intercepts Iranian-Designed Drones in Middle East”

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine revealed that Ukrainian military forces successfully intercepted Iranian-designed Shahed drones in various Middle Eastern nations during the Iran conflict. Zelenskyy emphasized that these operations were crucial in assisting allies to combat the same drones utilized by Russia in Ukraine.

Speaking to reporters, Zelenskyy disclosed these operations for the first time, stating that Ukrainian troops engaged in active missions abroad using locally manufactured interceptor drones that have proven effective against the Iranian-designed Shahed drones employed by Russia in Ukraine. He clarified that these were not mere training exercises but tangible support to enhance modern air defense systems.

The defensive endeavors involving Ukrainian forces occurred before a temporary ceasefire was brokered in the Middle East among Iran, the United States, and Israel. While Zelenskyy did not specify the exact countries where these operations took place, he confirmed that Ukrainian personnel operated across multiple nations to bolster their air defense capabilities. He previously mentioned the deployment of 228 Ukrainian experts in the region.

In return for their contributions, Ukraine is receiving weaponry to safeguard its energy infrastructure, as well as supplies of oil, diesel, and financial agreements in certain cases. Zelenskyy highlighted that these agreements would enhance Ukraine’s energy security and position the country as a significant player in defense exports.

Despite concerns that conflicts in the Middle East could divert Western military support from Ukraine, Zelenskyy assured that partners continued to provide missiles for Patriot systems, with a recent delivery of a new batch. He also mentioned urging U.S. envoys to visit Kyiv for trilateral discussions, although the plans are currently uncertain given the pressing situation in the Middle East.

Zelenskyy expressed hope for diplomatic progress and emphasized the importance of restoring full sanctions on Russian oil to prevent Moscow from sustaining its war efforts and manipulating energy resources amidst global price surges.
