“Separatism Surpasses Party Convention in Calgary”

The Conservative Party convention in Calgary is attended by around 2,650 delegates, making it not the largest right-leaning political gathering in the city this week. A separatist rally hosted by Stay Free Alberta at the Big Four building drew over 3,000 supporters, surpassing the convention in size.

The convention attendees are highly attuned to the prevailing political issue in Alberta, particularly within conservative circles. Some are eager for a vote on Alberta’s potential secession from Canada. Daniel Hein, a delegate from Medicine Hat, expressed his support for holding a referendum on the matter, emphasizing the importance of initiating the debate regardless of its contentious nature.

During his address at the convention, Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre acknowledged the growing separatist sentiment in Alberta and Quebec. He urged Conservatives to understand the reasons behind such sentiments, attributing them to the Liberal government’s handling of jurisdictional matters, the energy sector, affordability, and Canada’s history. Poilievre emphasized that electing a Conservative government could address these concerns and restore hope for the future.

The issue of separatism has sparked debates among Conservative politicians, with calls for action against the rising sentiment. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called on Alberta Premier Danielle Smith to take a firm stance on the matter. The Alberta New Democrats have demanded clarity from United Conservative MLAs on their stance regarding separatism, but the government has not complied with the request.

If Stay Free Alberta manages to collect at least 177,732 signatures by May for their petition, a referendum on independence would be required. The support for separatism is notably stronger among conservative activists in rural Alberta, with some MPs hesitant to publicly support the petition due to the divisive nature of the issue.

The issue of separatism presents a challenge to party unity within the federal Conservative base, as opinions on Alberta’s potential independence vary among party supporters. Despite the differing views, Conservatives are urged to engage in constructive dialogue and understand the concerns driving the separatist sentiment in the province.
