A recent study suggests that taking time to engage in enjoyable activities during daily life can have positive effects, and actively seeking out these moments can be beneficial. The research, featured in the journal Leisure Studies in July, explores the significance of everyday leisure experiences on individuals.
Lead author Karen Gallant, an associate professor at Dalhousie University, stressed the importance of acknowledging and embracing these small moments of fun or relaxation. The study, conducted in collaboration with researchers from Dalhousie, Brock University, and the University of Waterloo, involved interviews with individuals in Halifax between 2022 and 2023 regarding their encounters with everyday leisure moments.
Participants shared various activities that brought them joy, such as watching the sunrise, playing with a Rubik’s cube, or enjoying a cup of coffee. Despite their brevity, these experiences were found to reduce stress and provide a more positive outlook on life.
Gallant highlighted that these spontaneous leisure moments differ from structured activities and can occur anywhere, emphasizing their accessibility to all individuals regardless of their daily responsibilities. She mentioned a story of a single mother who found solace in tending to her plants for a few minutes each morning, setting a positive tone for her day.
According to the study, these moments offered participants feelings of happiness, connection with nature, or simply the enjoyment of sensory pleasures. They were described as a way to counteract societal pressures of constant productivity and reclaim a sense of self outside of work obligations.
Dr. Rebecca Boehm, a psychologist specializing in mental health and wellness, emphasized the importance of slowing down and being present in the moment to reduce cognitive overload. She recommended focusing on single sensory inputs to promote relaxation and mental clarity.
To incorporate more everyday leisure moments into their lives, individuals can carve out extra time in their day, explore new routes during daily commutes, or be prepared for spontaneous activities. Although smartphones can be a distraction, they can also facilitate opportunities for leisure, such as playing games or capturing moments to share with others.
Overall, the study suggests that embracing and seeking out these everyday leisure moments can lead to a more fulfilling and balanced lifestyle.
