Giant Blue Iceberg A-23a Drifting Towards South Atlantic

A colossal iceberg, once hailed as the largest on Earth, is currently drifting towards the South Atlantic Ocean, where it is expected to gradually melt away. Known as A-23a, this massive iceberg broke off from Antarctica in 1986, garnering continuous interest from scientists. However, its recent fame is due to its striking blue appearance, as captured in NASA satellite images shortly after the holiday season.

Initially a part of Antarctica’s Filchner Ice Shelf, A-23a calved in 1986, creating a tabular iceberg comparable in size to Rhode Island and weighing over one trillion tonnes. Despite remaining close to its origin for many years, it began its journey in 2020, eventually reaching the vicinity of South Georgia island. As of recent data from the U.S. National Ice Centre, A-23a has significantly decreased in size to about 781 square kilometers due to calving in warmer waters.

Experts, such as retired scientist Chris Schuman, believe that A-23a is unlikely to survive the Southern Hemisphere’s summer. The vibrant blue patches observed on the iceberg’s surface are attributed to meltwater accumulation, possibly caused by the ice slowly disintegrating. Walt Meier, a senior research scientist at the National Snow and Ice Data Centre, suggests that parallel ridges on the ice direct the flow of meltwater, creating the unique blue pattern.

While white and blue are commonly associated with icebergs, other colors like green, yellow, and even black have been observed in ice formations. The green hue in icebergs from the Weddell Sea may result from ice reflecting the color of phytoplankton in the water. Yellow icebergs, possibly containing iron oxide-rich dust, filter out red and blue light, leaving green light to escape. Moreover, a rare black iceberg spotted off Labrador’s coast sparked curiosity, with theories suggesting its dark color may have been due to dirt and rocks on its underbelly becoming visible above the water.

As icebergs move away from Antarctica towards warmer waters, they enter what is colloquially known as the “iceberg graveyard,” where they gradually disintegrate. The Weddell Sea gyre, a current circulating icebergs northward, guides their path towards the Scotia Sea and the Drake Passage, leading to their eventual demise. A-23a, currently located at approximately 54 degrees south latitude, is at risk of further disintegration as it navigates these warmer waters.

A recent satellite view of A-23a captured a significant chunk breaking off, indicating its ongoing deterioration. This process reflects the natural fate of icebergs as they journey away from Antarctica into warmer and less hospitable environments.
