“Environmental Group Advocates for Peatland Protection in New Brunswick”

An environmental group in New Brunswick is pushing for legislative changes to ensure all wetlands, including peatlands, are subject to watercourse permits for commercial activities. The Canadian Parks and Wilderness Society’s New Brunswick chapter is advocating for stronger protections under the province’s clean water laws. Currently, peatlands are exempt from the permitting process, which concerns the group’s executive director, Roberta Clowater.

Clowater emphasized the importance of safeguarding peatlands, which are significant for carbon storage and climate mitigation. These types of wetlands are abundant in New Brunswick, particularly in the northeast region. Despite their ecological value, peatlands have been left out of the regulatory framework that applies to most wetland projects.

The New Brunswick Peat Producers Association highlighted the economic importance of peatlands, supporting thousands of jobs and contributing millions of dollars annually to the province’s economy. However, Clowater warned that inadequate protection could lead to carbon release and exacerbate climate change.

Environment Minister Gilles LePage expressed uncertainty about why peatlands were excluded from permit requirements, acknowledging the need for a comprehensive review of water conservation strategies. Green Party MLA Megan Mitton, who has personal connections to peatlands in her constituency, emphasized the unique ecological characteristics of these areas and called for legislation that reflects public appreciation for preserving wetlands.
