“Sudbury Group Shifting Perception of Bats Through Research”

A local environmental group in Sudbury aims to shift the negative perception of bats to one of curiosity by studying the city’s bat population. The Junction Creek Stewardship Committee recently organized a “bat walk” at Park Lawn Cemetery, where participants used iPads equipped with echometers to detect the high-frequency sounds bats emit through echolocation. Evan Voutier, an ecological technician with the committee, highlighted the lack of research on bats in the area and emphasized the importance of involving the public in their research efforts.

The research conducted by Junction Creek Stewardship focuses on understanding how bats utilize various habitats across Greater Sudbury, including abandoned mines where some bats hibernate during winter. Franco Mariotti, a biologist and naturalist volunteering for the group, emphasized the significance of studying local bat populations due to threats such as white-nose syndrome, a fungal disease causing substantial declines in bat numbers across North America.

Mariotti further explained the risks bats face from wind turbines, as rapid pressure changes around the spinning blades can lead to severe internal trauma and mortality. Despite these challenges, the group’s research has revealed the presence of all eight bat species in Ontario within the Sudbury area, showcasing the diversity and importance of bats in the region as natural insect predators.

The committee plans to continue engaging the public through more “bat walks” to raise awareness and appreciation for bats and their ecological role. The next public event is scheduled for August 19th, offering an opportunity for community members to learn more about these fascinating creatures.
