“Resident’s Fight Against AI Data Center Gains Momentum”

Christie Little is alarmed by the possibility of an AI data center being developed across from her residence of two decades, foreseeing it as a distressing prospect. Little expressed her emotional attachment to her home and the apprehension of the impact this development could have on their future. Jet.AI, based in Las Vegas, and Consensus Core from Vancouver, have announced intentions to construct an AI data center in the rural municipality of Ritchot, specifically north of Ile des Chênes, covering a vast area of 141 hectares.

The potential facility’s proximity to the community raises concerns for Little, particularly regarding potential noise, light, and air pollution issues. The companies disclosed plans for a natural gas-fired power generation plant with up to six turbines on the designated land parcel, as reported to CBC News. In response to these plans, Little initiated an online petition, amassing over 10,000 signatures to date.

RM of Ritchot Mayor Chris Ewan was unavailable for comment, but a spokesperson responded to CBC News, acknowledging awareness of the petition and echoing residents’ queries. The RM seeks clarification directly from the company and advocates for community involvement in questioning the project. The Government of Manitoba confirmed its awareness of Jet.AI’s interest in establishing a data center in the province, indicating that power applications would first undergo review by Manitoba Hydro before submission to the provincial authorities.

Little, unfamiliar with AI data centers, took action upon discovering the proposed development near her residence, stressing the importance of spreading awareness through her petition. Meanwhile, in Saskatchewan, a similar project is underway in the RM of Sherwood, south of Regina, where protests against Bell Canada’s AI data center have gained momentum. Despite resident objections, the RM approved the project, prompting a petition with 13,000 signatures opposing the site.

Regina resident Jay-Jay Bigsky, actively protesting the AI data center, emphasizes the significance of physical petitions over online ones, highlighting the collective strength they represent. Bigsky’s concerns revolve around the environmental impact of massive data centers, particularly regarding power consumption and water usage, urging authorities to address these apprehensions seriously.

David Gerhard, head of the University of Manitoba computer science department, acknowledges the negative repercussions of data centers but underscores a broader perspective on the role of AI in society. Gerhard contemplates the necessity of balancing concerns about job displacement and environmental impact against the potential benefits of local data centers. However, Little remains steadfast in her opposition to the proposed data center, prioritizing the tranquility and scenic beauty of her surroundings over potential advantages.

As the debate surrounding AI data centers unfolds, residents like Little and activists like Bigsky continue to voice their concerns, underscoring the importance of community involvement and environmental stewardship in shaping future developments.
