“Progress Made at Bay d’Espoir Plant amid Newfoundland Power Warning”

Newfoundland is still under a power warning, but progress is being made at the Bay d’Espoir hydroelectric generating plant, according to Newfoundland and Labrador Hydro. Teams have successfully cleared significant amounts of frazil ice, with divers removing large ice sheets comparable to mattresses on Saturday. Currently, only one of the plant’s four penstocks is obstructed, allowing six out of seven generators to be operational. Despite this positive development, customers are advised by Newfoundland Power’s Vice President of Engineering and Energy Supply, Byron Chubbs, to be prepared for potential rotating power outages and to continue conserving energy.

Efforts to conserve power have been widespread across the island, with various municipalities and businesses taking proactive measures in response to the power warning. The City of Corner Brook, for instance, has closed all city buildings, including the Civic Centre and City Hall. Additionally, several municipalities, such as Mount Pearl and CBS, have transitioned public works to generator power and closed facilities to reduce electricity consumption. Businesses like the Avalon Mall in St. John’s have also joined in by reducing lighting usage.

Meanwhile, N.L. Hydro is facing challenges with importing additional power due to extreme cold temperatures in Nova Scotia, affecting the province’s power capacity. Despite these hurdles, efforts are ongoing to enhance power generation capabilities on the island. Repair work is underway at the Holyrood facility to maximize generation output, with progress being made on the units. Collett remains optimistic about the situation, emphasizing the need for continued patience and vigilance until further clarity is achieved.

As the situation evolves, updates will be provided regularly on social media platforms, with more information expected to be shared on Sunday evening. While schools are currently scheduled to be open on Monday, the Education Minister’s office is prepared to respond promptly to any changes. The public is urged to stay informed through official channels for any announcements regarding closures or updates.
