A seismic event measuring 5.6 on the Richter scale has occurred beneath the ocean near Vancouver Island. The earthquake, according to Earthquakes Canada, occurred at 11:41 p.m. PT on Sunday, approximately 219 kilometers southwest of Port Hardy at the northern end of Vancouver Island. It had a depth of around 10 kilometers below the ocean floor, with no associated tsunami risk, as confirmed by the federal agency.
The epicenter of the earthquake is situated in close proximity to several significant communities on Vancouver Island, including Campbell River, located about 300 kilometers away, and Port Alberni, which is around 330 kilometers distant. Reports indicate that the tremors from the earthquake were felt as far as Metro Vancouver, more than 450 kilometers to the southeast, with reports of shaking also documented in northern areas of Vancouver Island.
