Residents in Cumberland are being urged to exercise extra caution following an incident where a black bear injured a hiker. The B.C. Conservation Officer Service (BCCOS) and the Village of Cumberland issued a warning after the attack occurred near the Bevan Wetlands. According to BCCOS, the hiker, along with another person and an off-leash dog, were confronted by a group of black bears.
The injured hiker was promptly taken to the hospital but has since been discharged. BCCOS determined that the bear’s actions were defensive in nature and opted not to pursue the animal, though they will continue to monitor the area for safety.
To prevent similar incidents, the Village of Cumberland shared guidelines on social media advising visitors to be vigilant for bear indicators such as fresh droppings and tracks. Hikers are encouraged to travel in groups, keep their dogs on a leash, carry bear spray, and make noise while navigating the wilderness.
