Porter Airlines to Close Crew Bases in Thunder Bay and Halifax

Porter Airlines is set to close its crew bases in Thunder Bay, Ontario, and Halifax, Nova Scotia, impacting a total of 60 pilots, as reported by the Air Line Pilots Association (ALPA). The closures, scheduled for May, are part of Porter’s strategy to streamline operations by consolidating crew bases in Toronto and Ottawa.

A Porter spokesperson stated that after evaluating various options, concentrating crew bases in these two cities emerged as the most efficient approach for crew management and flight operations. The decision will directly impact 28 pilots in Thunder Bay and 32 pilots in Halifax, according to ALPA’s local branch.

ALPA’s Local Executive Council 272 expressed disappointment over the closures, highlighting the long-standing contributions of Porter pilots to the growth and success of the airline. The council emphasized the significant personal and professional disruption caused by the decision to shut down these bases, stressing the importance of engaging in discussions with Porter management to safeguard pilots’ rights and explore mitigation strategies.

Moreover, the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Local 4061, representing over 1,200 cabin crew members at Porter, indicated that approximately 60 of its members, including 26 flight attendants in Thunder Bay, will be affected by the closures. Flight attendants have been presented with options such as commuting to Toronto or Ottawa at their own expense, relocating, opting for voluntary layoff, or early retirement.

Despite the challenges posed by potential moves and lifestyle changes, CUPE Local 4061 President, Sarah Seal, acknowledged the dedication of flight attendants to their jobs and expressed support for members navigating through this transition. CBC News attempted to reach out to the Thunder Bay Airport for comments without success.
