Students from the animation program at Sheridan College in Oakville, Ontario, are thrilled about two movies created by alumni that have received Oscar nominations. They are inspired by the success of these graduates and aspire to achieve similar accomplishments in the future.
The films “KPop Demon Hunters” and “Elio,” directed by Maggie Kang and Domee Shi from Toronto, have both been nominated for the best animated feature film category at the 98th Academy Awards. Additionally, “KPop Demon Hunters” received a nomination for best original song for “Golden.”
For fourth-year animation student Phoebe Yeonsu Lee, witnessing a director like Kang make it to the Oscars holds special significance, especially as a fellow Korean woman. Lee expressed her excitement, mentioning her connection to K-pop culture and the unexpected pride she feels seeing her culture gaining recognition on a global platform.
Sheridan College has a rich tradition of producing award-winning filmmakers, according to Mario Positano, the program coordinator for the college’s animation school. He highlighted the long-standing success of the program, mentioning alumni like Chris Williams, who won an Oscar for “Big Hero 6,” and Domee Shi, who won for “Bao” and was also nominated for “Turning Red.”
Many Sheridan alumni have gone on to work for animation studios across Canada and the United States, including big names like Pixar and DreamWorks Animation. Kang, for example, was scouted by DreamWorks Animation after graduating in 2004.
The achievements of filmmakers like Shi and Kang serve as a source of motivation for current students, encouraging them to aim high and pursue their dreams. Positano emphasized the importance of balancing technological advancements with artistic integrity in the program, giving students the tools and inspiration to make a significant impact in the industry.
Aspiring filmmakers like Molly McCutcheon, who moved from Australia to attend Sheridan’s animation program, found inspiration in “KPop Demon Hunters” and its strong female characters. The film’s unique storyline and critical acclaim have fueled her aspirations to follow in the footsteps of successful Sheridan graduates.
The Academy Awards ceremony, where the winners will be announced, is scheduled for March 15 in Los Angeles. The success of alumni like Kang and Shi has instilled hope and determination in current students, showcasing the potential for greatness within the animation community.
