“Record Number Apply for Wildfire Fighter Positions”

This season, the B.C. Wildfire Service (BCWS) received numerous applications from individuals statewide hoping to become wildfire fighters. However, only around 200 applicants were selected for boot camp last week, with even fewer expected to secure positions in the end, as per BCWS reports.

An official from BCWS mentioned that in his two-decade career, this year saw the largest pool of applicants vying to join the ranks as wildfire fighters.

With the ongoing trend of hotter and extended summers and early season wildfires causing concern in British Columbia, the wildfire service has been bolstering its year-round recruitment efforts.

Reflecting on the qualities an ideal firefighter should possess, Kyle Young, the manager of organizational development at the wildfire service, emphasized the diversity of experiences individuals bring to the team dynamic.

He stated, “There’s no standard mold for what an individual should offer; it’s their unique backgrounds and abilities that contribute to the team’s synergy.”

Young highlighted that the surge in applications is partly due to the acknowledgment of the crucial work carried out by wildfire fighters during recent record-breaking fire seasons in British Columbia.

Chandler Bachtold, a seasoned instructor at the boot camp with extensive frontline experience, underscored the importance of teamwork in tasks such as constructing fire lines, laying hose, and tackling hotspots.

He emphasized, “You can’t achieve success solo. Collaboration with your crewmates is essential, pushing each other to excel.”

Bachtold highlighted the need for good physical and mental health among BCWS firefighters, who can spend up to 14 consecutive days in the field before a break, underscoring the value of being a team player.

He added, “While the physical demands are taxing, the camaraderie among crew members and the sense of accomplishment make it truly rewarding.”

According to Bachtold, new recruits are assigned to various branches within BCWS, including prevention, operations, and planning.

One aspiring firefighter, Melanie Clayton, 26, shared her motivation for applying to the boot camp, citing friends who had served on fire lines as her inspiration.

She described the camp as one of the toughest challenges she had faced, both mentally and physically, expressing pride in her accomplishments despite the hardships.
