“Michigan Synagogue Attack: Man with Rifle Targets Jewish Community”

A man armed with a rifle who drove into a significant Michigan synagogue in what federal officials termed an assault had recently lost four family members in an Israeli airstrike in Lebanon, as per an official’s statement on Friday. Ayman Mohamad Ghazali, a 41-year-old naturalized U.S. citizen from Lebanon, was shot by security personnel after crashing into Temple Israel in West Bloomfield Township near Detroit, driving through a hallway in a vehicle that eventually caught fire, according to authorities.

The FBI, leading the investigation, categorized the incident at one of the nation’s largest Reform synagogues as a violent act specifically targeting the Jewish community. Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard confirmed that the synagogue’s staff, teachers, and 140 children at its early childhood center were unharmed.

Ghazali arrived in the U.S. in 2011 on a visa as the spouse of a U.S. citizen and obtained U.S. citizenship in 2016, according to the Department of Homeland Security. The Israeli airstrike that claimed four lives in Mashgharah, eastern Lebanon, on Mar. 5 was reported by Lebanon’s state agency and the Lebanese Health Ministry, with additional casualties.

The aftermath of the conflict involving Iran has extended into the Middle East, resulting in heightened Israeli attacks on Lebanon following clashes with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah group. A local official in Mashgharah, speaking anonymously, disclosed that Ghazali’s two brothers and a niece and nephew were killed during the airstrike at their residence. The official mentioned that Kassim Ghazali was a recognized soccer coach and personal trainer, while Ibrahim Ghazali worked as a school bus driver in the village.

Following the attack on Temple Israel, smoke emanated from the synagogue, with one security officer sustaining injuries but not life-threatening. Thirty law enforcement officers were treated for smoke inhalation. Cassi Cohen, the director of strategic development at Temple Israel, recounted the chaotic moments during the incident, emphasizing the swift and safe evacuation of children and staff.

Rabbi Arianna Gordon expressed gratitude to the security team, law enforcement, and early childhood teachers for their prompt actions in ensuring the safety of the children. Parents rushed to reunite with their children post-evacuation, with some families regrouping at a nearby Jewish community center.

Synagogues worldwide have heightened security measures amid escalating tensions following the U.S. and Israel’s military actions against Iran. President Donald Trump condemned the attack, and Steven Ingber, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Detroit, emphasized the need for action against antisemitism in the wake of the incident.

This incident marks the second attack on a place of worship in Michigan within a year, underscoring the concerning trend of violence targeting religious institutions. Oakland County, with a population of approximately 1.3 million, houses a significant portion of the Detroit-area Jewish community, with Temple Israel boasting 12,000 members, as per its official website.
