“William Shatner and Daughter Beat Cancer Together”

William Shatner, the renowned 95-year-old Canadian actor famous for portraying Capt. James T. Kirk in “Star Trek,” recently opened up about a challenging period he and his youngest daughter, Melanie Shatner Gretsch, went through. Both were diagnosed with advanced cancer within months of each other.

Shatner revealed that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 malignant melanoma in June 2023, which had spread to his lungs and brain. Around the same time, Gretsch, aged 61, found a lump in her breast. Despite initial doubts, tests confirmed her diagnosis.

During Gretsch’s chemotherapy, she found solace in her father’s support. Shatner, remaining calm and reassuring, comforted her, emphasizing that this was just a temporary setback. Shortly after, Shatner received his own cancer diagnosis but maintained a positive outlook, believing that timely intervention saved his life.

Fortunately, both Shatner and Gretsch have been cancer-free since late 2024, attributing their recovery to excellent medical care. Gretsch underwent extensive treatments, including multiple rounds of chemo, a double mastectomy, and radiation therapy. Shatner had surgery to remove a tumor and underwent two years of immunotherapy targeting his lung and brain cancer.

The shared experience has deepened their appreciation for life’s simple joys, with Shatner expressing gratitude for everyday marvels like hummingbirds, family, and pets. Despite attempts to reach Shatner for comment, CBC News did not receive a response by the publication deadline.
