Israeli forces have reportedly caused the deaths of at least seven Palestinians in separate incidents in the Gaza Strip on Thursday, according to medics. This came shortly after the military indicated it had targeted the location of a failed militant rocket launch, escalating tensions and endangering the fragile ceasefire between Hamas and Israel.
Medics stated that an Israeli airstrike resulted in the deaths of at least three individuals and injured three others, including children, in a tent in the western part of Khan Younis in southern Gaza. Another strike claimed the life of a person east of the city, near Israeli-operated areas. Subsequently, a man was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike at a school in Jabalia, which also housed displaced families, and another person lost their life in a tent near Deir al-Balah in central Gaza, bringing the total death toll to at least seven for the day. Israeli authorities have not yet commented on the reports of casualties.
One tragic incident involved the death of 11-year-old Hamsa Housou, who was fatally injured when her home in Jabalia was hit by shells and shrapnel. Despite the ceasefire supposedly in place, her family experienced the horrors of ongoing conflict. Housou’s uncle recounted the heartbreaking events leading to her death and questioned the effectiveness of the ceasefire amid continued violence in the region.
The situation in Falluja, the neighborhood where Housou’s family resides, remains tense with daily shootings by Israeli troops, despite the ceasefire agreements. Israeli military authorities denied knowledge of strike-related casualties in the area on Thursday, emphasizing that any actions taken post-ceasefire were in response to perceived violations.
Earlier, the Israeli military reported targeting a rocket launch site following an unsuccessful rocket launch towards Israeli territory, accusing Hamas of violating the ceasefire multiple times. The ceasefire, which began in October, has seen limited progress, with key provisions yet to be fully implemented. The future phases of the ceasefire plan, including Hamas disarmament and further Israeli withdrawals, remain contentious issues.
The ongoing violence has taken a toll on both Palestinians and Israelis, with hundreds of lives lost since the ceasefire commenced. Efforts to move to the next phase of the ceasefire deal have stalled amid disagreements and continued hostilities between the two parties. The situation remains precarious, with both sides accusing each other of breaching the terms of the agreement and little advancement towards lasting peace in Gaza.
