U.S. President Donald Trump has officially adjusted the Sect. 232 national security tariffs on select aluminum, steel, and copper imports by signing a proclamation on Monday, as reported by the White House. Effective June 8, tariffs on specific steel and aluminum derivative products, such as certain types of agricultural machinery and residential heating, air conditioning, and ventilation equipment, will see a reduction from 25 percent to 15 percent.
The White House stated that mobile industrial equipment like bulldozers and forklifts will now face a 15 percent tariff when imported from trade deal countries eligible for this treatment. Furthermore, foreign companies can qualify for a 10 percent tariff if their capital equipment comprises at least 85 percent U.S. melted and poured or smelted and cast steel or aluminum by weight.
Under the adjusted regulations, two new categories of steel and aluminum derivative import products, namely steel racks and aluminum lithographic plates, will be subject to 25 percent duties. These changes will take effect for goods imported or withdrawn from bonded warehouses after 12:01 a.m. ET on June 8. The amended tariffs are set to be in effect until December 31, 2027, with the aim of encouraging immediate investments to strengthen the country’s industrial foundation, according to the White House.
