“Alberta Residents Urged to Prepare for Wildfire Season”

Wildfire season has commenced in Alberta, sparking concerns among residents about potential evacuations. Alberta has witnessed significant evacuations over the past decade due to wildfires, such as the ones in Fort McMurray in 2016 and Jasper in 2024. Melanie Galea, who evacuated during the Horse River Fire in Fort McMurray, admitted to feeling unprepared at the time, attributing it to the stress affecting her decision-making process.

Galea’s lack of preparedness was evident in her choice of items to pack, which included winter gear, cheese blocks, but forgetting her cherished Christmas ornaments and photos. Since then, Galea has adopted a proactive approach, preparing for wildfire season annually by staying informed, packing essentials, and making arrangements for her two cats in case of emergencies.

It is recommended by experts to have a go-bag ready for emergencies, considering the history of evacuations in Alberta, with significant numbers recorded in recent years. Julie MacEachern, a community emergency management plans advisor, highlighted the misconception of assuming ample time to pack as a common mistake during evacuations.

A Government of Alberta survey in 2025 revealed that 44% of respondents felt unprepared for emergencies, emphasizing the importance of readiness. The Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo offers guidance on emergency preparedness, including tips on insurance checks, home safety audits, and go-bag packing essentials.

Experts suggest that a well-prepared go-bag should cater to personal, family, and pet needs, containing vital documents, medications, and food and water supplies. It is advised to have supplies to sustain for at least three days, including entertainment for children and charging devices. Keeping vehicles fueled or charged halfway is also crucial for readiness.

Bryce Kumka of Acera Insurance recommends creating a home content inventory through video documentation and maintaining fuel-reduction measures around homes to prevent wildfire spread. Ensuring adequate insurance coverage before wildfire season is vital, as obtaining coverage during an ongoing wildfire event is not feasible.

Stephen Lacroix, managing director of the Alberta Emergency Management Agency, stresses the importance of having emergency plans for various natural disasters apart from wildfires. He encourages utilizing emergency preparedness resources available in multiple languages on the province’s website and having designated family meeting points during emergencies to alleviate stress levels through preparedness.
