The Chicago Cubs have officially signed Alex Bregman to a lucrative five-year contract worth $175 million. Bregman, the standout third baseman, will be introduced by the Cubs in a press conference at Wrigley Field on Thursday. As part of the deal, Bregman will switch his jersey number to No. 3, with Nico Hoerner now wearing No. 2.
In a unique move, Chicago has structured the contract to defer $70 million, representing 40% of the total amount. Bregman’s annual salary will be $35 million, with $15 million deferred for this year and 2029, $10 million each for 2027 and 2028, and $20 million for 2030.
The deferred payments will be made in eight installments every July 31 from 2034 to 2041. The breakdown includes $1,875,000 for each of the salaries in 2022 and 2029, $1.25 million for 2027 and 2028, and $2.5 million for 2030. Additionally, Bregman will have a full no-trade provision and a hotel suite during road trips.
Bregman, who will turn 32 in March, had previously considered a three-year, $120 million deal with Boston but ultimately chose the Cubs. He received a warm reception from Chicago fans when he attended an NHL game in the city wearing the team’s jersey.
During his season with the Red Sox, Bregman posted a .273 batting average with 18 home runs and 62 RBIs. His contract with the Cubs includes a no-trade clause, granting him veto power over any potential trades.
Having spent the first nine seasons of his career with the Houston Astros, Bregman was a key player in winning World Series titles in 2017 and 2022, although the 2017 victory was marred by a sign-stealing scandal that tarnished the team’s reputation.
The Cubs, who finished second in the National League Central last season with a 92-70 record, are looking to strengthen their infield with the addition of Bregman. The team may consider making further roster adjustments to accommodate Bregman’s arrival, possibly involving Matt Shaw, who demonstrated strong defensive skills while contributing offensively last season. Shaw’s versatility could see him transition into a super-utility role to complement Bregman’s presence in the lineup.
