The Czech Republic secured their inaugural Group A victory by triumphing over Finland 2-0 in the Winter Olympic women’s ice hockey competition on Sunday. Meanwhile, Sweden booked a spot in the quarterfinals after a convincing 4-0 win against France in Group B at Milano Rho Ice Hockey Arena.
Both Finland and the Czech Republic faced challenges at the start of the 2026 Olympic Games. The Czech team suffered a 5-1 defeat in their opener against the U.S. followed by a 4-3 shootout loss to Switzerland. On the other hand, Finland’s first match was postponed due to four players testing positive for norovirus, and they later lost 5-0 to the U.S.
The Czech team took the lead early in the third minute with a goal from Tereza Pištěková. Despite Finland having a player penalized, they managed to defend well. In the closing moments of the first period, Natálie Mlýnková extended the Czechs’ lead with a powerful shot.
Finland tried to stage a comeback but was unsuccessful, with the Czech goalie Klára Peslarová making crucial saves. The Czechs successfully held onto their lead, securing their first win in the Olympics this year.
In Group A, the U.S. leads with six points, followed by the Czech Republic with two points. Defending champions Canada have three points, while Switzerland holds two points. Finland is yet to earn a point, but all five teams will advance to the quarterfinals, with seedings determined by their performance in the preliminary round.
In another match, Sweden dominated Group B with a perfect record of nine points after three games, following a 4-0 victory over France. Germany, Japan, and Italy are tied at three points each after two matches, while France remains at the bottom without any points.
Sweden’s strong performance included goals from Thea Johansson, Sara Hjalmarsson, Hanna Thuvik, and Lisa Johansson against France. The Swedes showcased their offensive prowess, with Johansson leading as the tournament’s top scorer with four goals.
Despite some penalties and challenges, Sweden maintained control of the game against France, eventually sealing their victory. The French team fought hard but couldn’t break through the Swedish defense.
Sweden’s coach, Ulf Lundberg, expressed confidence in his team’s potential to claim a medal at the Olympics. The Swedish roster boasts young talent, including players competing at U.S. colleges, driven by the desire to achieve success at the Games.
