“Stephen Gogolev Leads Canadian Figure Skating Championships”

Stephen Gogolev, known for his reserved demeanor, displayed rare excitement as he took a commanding lead in the Canadian figure skating championships and the battle for Canada’s Olympic men’s singles spot after an impressive short program. Performing to the “Mugzy’s Move” medley, the 21-year-old skater from Toronto wowed the sold-out crowd at Centre Slush Puppie with two quad jumps and a clean triple axel, earning a remarkable score of 99.60 points.

Following Gogolev, Vancouver’s Wesley Chiu claimed the second spot with a score of 89.14, while Aleksa Rakic from New Westminster, B.C., secured the third position with 83.60 points. Gogolev, once a prodigy who faced setbacks due to back issues following a growth spurt, made a triumphant return to the championships after several years, setting personal bests throughout the season.

Despite his impressive performance, Gogolev remains focused on the upcoming free program, acknowledging that the competition is not over until the final results are in. Reigning national champion Roman Sadovsky, who had high expectations coming into the event, faced challenges and landed in fourth place after a less-than-perfect routine.

Gogolev and Sadovsky have been engaged in a season-long battle for Canada’s sole men’s singles entry at the Milan Cortina Olympics, with the final team announcement scheduled for Sunday. Olympic selection criteria consider a skater’s performance over the past seasons, emphasizing consistency and overall body of work.

In another noteworthy moment, veteran skater Keegan Messing, making a comeback after a brief retirement, received a warm reception from the audience despite a less-than-ideal performance. Reflecting on his return, Messing expressed gratitude for the opportunity to skate again and the support from fans.

Meanwhile, Deanna Stellato-Dudek and Maxime Deschamps, the 2024 world champions, dazzled in the pairs short program, securing the top spot with 78.35 points. Stellato-Dudek made headlines with her stunning new costume designed by luxury fashion brand Oscar de la Renta, marking a unique collaboration in figure skating fashion.

As the competition continues, the anticipation builds for the remaining events, starting with the rhythm dance on Saturday. The championships are set to unveil more thrilling performances and determine the final roster for the upcoming Winter Olympics.
