Zayne Parekh, a 19-year-old defenseman for the Calgary Flames, set a new record at the world junior hockey championship by scoring the most points ever by a Canadian defenseman. Despite surpassing the previous record of 12 points held by Bryan McCabe and Alex Pietrangelo, Parekh expressed disappointment at not winning the gold medal, which he considered the ultimate goal.
Parekh also addressed comments he made earlier about showcasing his personality and not being a “robot” like some NHL players when speaking to the media. He later apologized for any misunderstandings and emphasized his respect for his team and the Flames organization.
In the bronze-medal game against Finland, Canada secured a 6-3 victory with notable performances from Gavin McKenna, who scored and contributed three assists, and Michael Hage, who finished the tournament with a high of 15 points. Despite the disappointment of not winning gold, the Canadian team showed resilience and ended the tournament on a positive note.
Canada’s bronze victory marked the sixth time the country had claimed a bronze medal at the event, with their last win in the third-place game dating back to 2012. The team, which has a record 20 gold medals, showcased strong teamwork and determination throughout the competition.
In the gold medal final, Sweden defeated the Czech Republic 4-2, securing their third world junior hockey title. The victory marked the first all-European final since 2016, with Sweden adding to their previous wins in 1981 and 2012. The Czech Republic, with titles in 2000 and 2001, put up a strong fight but fell short in the final match.
