The rivalry between Mikaela Shiffrin and Swiss skier Camille Rast is intensifying as the countdown to the women’s slalom event at the upcoming Milan Cortina Winter Olympics reaches 45 days. Rast broke Shiffrin’s winning streak in World Cup slaloms by narrowly defeating her by 0.14 seconds in Slovenia. Despite leading Shiffrin in a previous race in Austria, Rast secured her fourth career victory and third in slalom, showcasing strong skiing skills that impressed Shiffrin. Shiffrin, on the other hand, expressed satisfaction with her performance and highlighted the intensity and focus she applied during the competition.
Rast’s recent success included a giant slalom win on the same hill, where she dedicated her victory to the victims of a tragic fire near her hometown. The duo dominated the competition, with Rast’s teammate Wendy Holdener securing third place, trailing Rast by a significant 1.83 seconds. Shiffrin’s teammate Paula Moltzan finished in fourth place, closely following the lead.
Shiffrin, a decorated skier with multiple world titles, continued to showcase her prowess by adding to her impressive career record of 69 slalom wins and 106 overall victories, setting World Cup records. The upcoming slalom races in Flachau and the Czech Republic will further test the skills of these top athletes before the Winter Olympics. Additionally, upcoming downhill and super-G events in Austria will provide more thrilling competition in the world of alpine skiing.
