The Toronto Blue Jays have officially inked a four-year, $60 million contract with Japanese infielder Kazuma Okamoto on Sunday. Okamoto, a seasoned player with six all-star appearances in Japan’s Nippon Professional Baseball league, was previously linked to the Blue Jays in reports on Saturday.
At 29 years old, Okamoto, who plays as both a third baseman and first baseman, showcased his prowess by batting .327 with 15 home runs and 49 RBIs across 69 games for the Yomiuri Giants last season, despite being sidelined for a significant portion of the season due to an elbow injury.
As per the MLB’s agreement with NPB, the Blue Jays are obligated to pay the Giants a posting fee amounting to $10,875,000. Okamoto’s contract includes a $5 million signing bonus, a $7 million salary for the current year, and $16 million annually for the subsequent three seasons.
Given the presence of five-time All-Star Vladimir Guerrero Jr. at first base, Okamoto is expected to primarily fill the third base position. The team’s lineup adjustments may see Addison Barger, Ernie Clement, Will Wagner, Isiah Kiner-Falefa, and Buddy Kennedy adapting to new roles to accommodate Okamoto’s addition.
In a corresponding roster move, the Blue Jays have designated right-handed pitcher Paxton Schultz for assignment. The team’s proactive approach follows their near-miss in the World Series, as they have bolstered their roster by securing key players such as right-handers Dylan Cease, Cody Ponce, and reliever Tyler Rogers to lucrative multi-year contracts.
Additionally, right-hander Shane Bieber opted to exercise his $16 million player option for the 2026 season instead of exploring free agency. The Blue Jays’ recent signings and roster adjustments reflect their commitment to strengthening their lineup for the upcoming season.
