Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has voiced criticism towards Europe’s handling of the Greenland dispute with the U.S., urging the continent to exhibit more courage. He characterized Europe as a “fragmented kaleidoscope” of smaller and middle powers, emphasizing the need for a stronger stance in defending global freedom. Zelenskyy made these remarks during a passionate speech at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
During his address, Zelenskyy urged European nations to take action against Russian tankers transporting oil that is used to fund the war against Ukraine, pointing out the recent controversial seizure of oil-carrying ships by the U.S. He questioned Europe’s reluctance to follow suit, highlighting the importance of decisive action in shaping the future.
In a significant development, reports emerged of France’s navy intercepting an oil tanker in the Mediterranean Sea that originated from Russia, following intelligence provided by the United Kingdom. This operation, aimed at targeting the sanctioned Russian shadow fleet, was conducted in accordance with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, according to French President Emmanuel Macron.
Zelenskyy commended the interception on social media, describing it as a necessary display of resolve. He also mentioned upcoming trilateral meetings between Ukraine, Russia, and the U.S. in Abu Dhabi, stressing the importance of all parties being prepared to make compromises for peace.
Additionally, Zelenskyy discussed peace talks and air defense supplies in a productive meeting with President Trump, expressing optimism about reinforcing their collaboration. Trump, who also lauded the positive discussions with Zelenskyy, emphasized the need to end the war in Ukraine.
Meanwhile, U.S. envoys engaged in talks with Russian President Putin as part of ongoing diplomatic efforts. The discussions focused on resolving territorial issues and achieving a long-term settlement while addressing key sticking points in the peace process.
As the conflict in Ukraine persists, Zelenskyy grapples with an energy crisis exacerbated by Russian airstrikes, leading to power outages and heating disruptions in several regions. Recent attacks have resulted in casualties and further hardships for Ukrainian civilians enduring the harsh winter conditions.
