Lee Marten, a 48-year-old sergeant from the Vancouver Police Department (VPD), who is currently on leave and using a wheelchair, recently underwent a groundbreaking Neuralink brain implant procedure at University Health Network’s (UHN) Toronto Western Hospital. This innovative procedure, conducted as part of a clinical trial, enables Marten to control a computer cursor using his mind, typing on a digital keyboard with remarkable speed.

Being one of the first Canadian ALS patients to receive this Neuralink implant, Marten joins a select group of individuals worldwide undergoing the same procedure. The technology, owned by the controversial trillionaire Elon Musk, has drawn criticism, but Marten views it as an opportunity to enhance his quality of life and support scientific advancements that could benefit others facing similar challenges.

Marten’s journey to this point began in 2022 when he noticed symptoms affecting his mobility. Initially attributed to a brain tumor, subsequent diagnoses revealed the devastating progression of ALS, a degenerative condition with no known cure. Despite facing the reality of losing his ability to walk, speak, and breathe, Marten remains optimistic about the potential improvements the Neuralink implant could bring to his life and his ability to communicate with his loved ones in the future.

The Neuralink trial at UHN’s Toronto Western Hospital, known as CAN-PRIME, is part of a global initiative involving multiple countries, including the U.S., U.K., and Abu Dhabi. The procedure, which involves implanting over 1,000 electrodes into the brain’s motor cortex using a specialized robot, aims to provide paralyzed patients with enhanced control over their movements through neural signals.

Despite initial concerns and a last-minute change in the surgical approach, Marten successfully underwent the Neuralink implant procedure, demonstrating remarkable resilience and determination throughout the process. As he continues his recovery and adjustment to the new technology, Marten remains focused on exploring possibilities such as creating playlists for his children and engaging in activities like video gaming, showcasing his unwavering spirit in the face of adversity.
