“Trump Brokers 10-Day Ceasefire in Israel-Lebanon Conflict”

U.S. President Donald Trump declared a 10-day cessation of hostilities between Israel and Lebanon on Thursday, yet significant disagreements regarding Israeli troop presence and the dismantling of Hezbollah immediately raised doubts about the sustainability of the ceasefire.

As the clock struck midnight local time on Friday, celebratory gunfire echoed through parts of Beirut to mark the ceasefire’s commencement, following Trump’s announcement on Truth Social. However, the atmosphere of peace was quickly marred by reports of Israeli violations, including sporadic shelling of southern Lebanese villages.

Hezbollah promptly issued a detailed statement outlining its military engagements with Israel up to the ceasefire’s initiation. Trump later took to social media, urging Hezbollah to honor the ceasefire in a bid for lasting peace.

The ceasefire arrived amidst weeks of intensified conflict between Israel and Hezbollah, resulting in over 2,000 casualties in Lebanon and displacing more than a million individuals. Trump credited “excellent” discussions with Lebanese President Joseph Aoun and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the temporary truce.

The U.S. State Department released the ceasefire agreement details, highlighting the potential for extension based on progress in negotiations and Lebanon’s demonstration of sovereignty. The accord mandates Lebanon to prevent attacks on Israel by Hezbollah and other armed groups, with Israel retaining the right to defend against imminent threats but refraining from offensive operations in Lebanon during the 10-day period.

While the ceasefire’s success hinges on Hezbollah’s compliance, uncertainties loomed as the group previously rejected dialogue with Israel. Netanyahu reiterated Israel’s stance on dismantling Hezbollah and maintaining a security zone along the border with Syria.

The ceasefire announcement followed historic direct talks between Lebanon and Israel in Washington, D.C., and signals of a potential temporary truce communicated by Iran’s ambassador in Beirut. Hezbollah’s commitment to the agreement remained contingent on Israel’s cessation of hostilities.

Renewed hostilities erupted between Israel and Hezbollah following rocket attacks by the latter in solidarity with Iran, resulting in significant casualties and destruction in Lebanon. The conflict escalated with retaliatory strikes and widespread devastation, underscoring the challenges facing the region’s peace efforts.
