Sun Kissed Energy, a solar installation company based in Truro, has been removed from Solar Nova Scotia following complaints from customers who have not received the services they paid for. Dave Brushett, the chair of Solar Nova Scotia, did not provide details on the reason for the company’s expulsion.
One customer, Debbie Merritt, paid Sun Kissed Energy $31,000 upfront in September for a solar installation at her home in Salmon River, Nova Scotia. However, six months later, no work has been done on her property, and she is now seeking a refund as the company has laid off employees and liquidated assets.
CEO Mark Shelley stated that Sun Kissed Energy is undergoing restructuring due to a decline in sales following changes to a federal program supporting energy efficiency upgrades. Despite the challenges, Shelley assured customers that the company is operational and working to fulfill all pending installations.
Several former employees revealed that Sun Kissed Energy’s debt exceeds $8 million. Additionally, the company is facing legal action from suppliers and contractors, including Guillevin International, Kent Building Supplies, and High Tide Electric, for unpaid dues totaling hundreds of thousands of dollars.
FinanceIt, a financing provider, announced that they are no longer working with Sun Kissed Energy after the company left projects unfinished. Meanwhile, Service Nova Scotia disclosed that they have received two complaints regarding Sun Kissed Energy since 2002.
Customers like Marc DeCarufel have expressed concerns about the company’s future, especially after encountering difficulties in obtaining updates on their projects. Police involvement has also been reported by customers like John Laska, although Nova Scotia RCMP did not confirm any ongoing investigations into the company or its CEO.
