The Quebec government will receive up to $12.4 million from the federal government to manage the buyback of prohibited firearms in the province. Since May 2020, about 2,500 types of firearms have been banned by Ottawa due to their military-grade nature, not suitable for recreational use. The federal government has allocated over $700 million for a national buyback initiative to compensate owners for their banned firearms. Quebec’s Public Security Minister Ian Lafrenière expressed the province’s support for the federal program, emphasizing its importance in enhancing community safety. Public Safety Canada announced that the buyback program will soon be available to firearm owners nationwide.
