A woman from Charlottetown has been sentenced to one year in jail after admitting to causing fatal injuries to her three-month-old daughter. Cassie Acorn, 40, struck her baby’s head against the floor in March 2025 when the infant wouldn’t stop crying, resulting in a fractured skull. Despite initially facing a first-degree murder charge, Acorn pleaded guilty to infanticide due to a psychiatric evaluation indicating she was suffering from postpartum depression at the time of the incident.
The judge deliberated for three weeks before handing down the sentence, emphasizing the need to maintain public confidence in the justice system and condemn Acorn’s actions. Both the Crown and defense discussed the rarity of cases similar to Acorn’s during the sentencing hearing. While the defense sought a suspended sentence or house arrest, the judge deemed a year in jail as the appropriate punishment to uphold the seriousness of the crime and the public’s trust in the legal system.
Judge Lantz highlighted the unique circumstances of Acorn’s case, noting her desire to be a good mother despite the challenges she faced, including being an abuse survivor with postpartum depression. He emphasized the gravity of child abuse and the need for stringent sentences when vulnerable children are victims of crimes. Acorn, who has taken steps to prevent future pregnancies, will also be on probation for two years post-release and provide a DNA sample for a national database.
