Residents of Inuvik, N.W.T., have been urged to lower their home heating and find ways to decrease energy consumption due to a limited propane availability in the area. Inuvik Gas Ltd. issued a notice on Tuesday evening requesting the community to conserve energy because of unforeseen fuel supply constraints and weather conditions impacting road access.
The advisory did not disclose specific details about the local supply situation but emphasized the need for the community to reduce its usage of propane in the upcoming days. Inuvik Gas mentioned collaborating with the town of Inuvik, the Yukon, and N.W.T. governments to facilitate road access for propane delivery to increase the supply.
Inuvik Mayor Peter Clarkson mentioned that two propane resupply trucks had already reached the community with assistance from Yukon highway officials, enabling the reopening of the Dempster Highway. The route, crucial for transporting fuel north to Inuvik, had been closed on the Yukon side until recently due to severe weather conditions.
Despite efforts to replenish the propane stock, Inuvik Gas was not immediately available for confirmation on the resupply truck arrivals but assured the preparation of a detailed statement. Clarkson highlighted the collective involvement of various government levels in expediting the delivery of propane to Inuvik amidst the existing shortage and extreme cold weather.
As the situation unfolds, residents are advised by Inuvik Gas to maintain home temperatures at manageable levels, and explore alternative heating options like diesel, wood, or electric sources instead of relying solely on propane. Additionally, they are encouraged to adopt energy-saving practices such as refraining from using ovens excessively, taking shorter showers, insulating homes with closed blinds or drapes, and working remotely to reduce heating demands in office buildings.
