“Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment Ahead of Schedule and Under Budget”

A successful nuclear refurbishment project at the Darlington power plant has concluded, with the unit preparing to resume operations shortly. Energy Minister Stephen Lecce announced the completion on Monday, highlighting that the refurbishment was completed ahead of schedule by four months and under budget by $150 million. The total budget for the refurbishment stood at $12.8 billion.

The extensive refurbishment initiative at the Darlington Nuclear Generating Station encompassed all four nuclear reactor units, ensuring the station’s operational capability is extended until at least 2055. Premier Doug Ford’s administration is emphasizing the importance of nuclear power to address the province’s increasing electricity demands, with plans for four small modular reactors at Darlington in progress.

Moreover, the government is evaluating the potential establishment of a new large-scale plant at Bruce Power in Tiverton, Ontario, while also considering a new nuclear facility near Port Hope, Ontario. Efforts to extend the lifespan of units at the Pickering nuclear plant are also part of the province’s energy strategy.
