A Canadian national has passed away in Iran due to actions by the Iranian government, as stated by Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand. The minister, in a recent social media message, urged the regime to halt its violent suppression of demonstrators. According to the U.S.-based Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA), over 2,600 individuals have lost their lives since protests began in late December.
Anand condemned the Iranian regime for disregarding human life in response to peaceful protests from the Iranian people demanding their grievances be heard amidst ongoing human rights violations. She extended her deepest sympathies to the victim’s family in Canada, with consular officials providing support.
Global Affairs Canada (GAC) acknowledged the Canadian’s death in Iran on Wednesday but did not disclose further details. GAC is now recommending that Canadians currently in Iran depart the country if they can ensure their safety.
Tensions are escalating in the region, with U.S. President Donald Trump pledging “very strong action” if Iran proceeds with executing protesters. The United States is pulling back some personnel from Middle East bases following warnings from Tehran that it would target American bases if the U.S. takes military action.
