Pakistan’s Chief Minister of Balochistan reported that security forces eliminated 145 militants during a 40-hour battle in response to coordinated gun and bomb attacks in the region that resulted in nearly 50 fatalities. The province is currently facing a severe escalation of violence as insurgents intensify assaults on security forces, civilians, and infrastructure in the resource-rich area bordering Iran and Afghanistan.
Attacks carried out by individuals disguised as civilians targeted hospitals, schools, banks, and markets, indiscriminately harming ordinary people. The junior interior minister of Pakistan, Talal Chaudhry, stated that militants utilized civilians as human shields during the incidents. The Baloch Liberation Army, a banned separatist group, claimed responsibility for the attacks under the operation name “Herof” or “black storm.”
In the aftermath of the attacks in Quetta, the provincial capital, the scene displayed burnt-out vehicles, bullet-riddled structures, and heightened security measures with tightened patrols and restricted movements. Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti confirmed the death toll, which included 17 law enforcement personnel and 31 civilians. The military reported the elimination of 92 militants on Saturday and 41 on Friday.
The coordinated assaults occurred across various districts in Balochistan, with armed individuals targeting security installations and attempting suicide bombings. Large-scale counter-operations by the army, police, and counterterrorism units were swiftly initiated to address the threat. The violence marks one of the deadliest instances in recent years, underscoring the challenges faced in maintaining security in the region.
Balochistan, known as Pakistan’s largest and least developed province, has grappled with a prolonged insurgency led by ethnic Baloch separatists striving for increased autonomy and a fairer distribution of natural resources. Pakistan’s Defence Minister highlighted that militants are increasingly targeting civilians and low-income communities, with security forces successfully repelling attempts to seize control of strategic locations.
Amid the turmoil, Pakistan’s military attributed the attacks to “Indian-sponsored militants,” a claim refuted by India, which accused Pakistan of diverting attention from internal issues. The United States condemned the violence as acts of terrorism, expressing solidarity with Pakistan in combating such threats. The Balochistan Liberation Army has been designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S. government.
The incidents in Balochistan underscore the ongoing security challenges in Pakistan, where Islamist militant groups have periodically carried out attacks across the country. The situation remains fluid as authorities continue their efforts to address the root causes of violence and ensure the safety of the population.
