A beluga whale from Marineland in Niagara Falls, Ontario, has passed away at Oceanogràfic de València in Spain. The whale, named Jelly Bean, died suddenly less than a month after being transferred to the aquarium. Jelly Bean, along with another beluga named Cleopatra and four dolphins, had arrived on August 27 as part of an international rescue operation.
According to a statement from Oceanogràfic, Jelly Bean had been experiencing feeding difficulties and was closely monitored by the veterinary team. Despite showing signs of improvement and being responsive to caregivers, the whale’s condition deteriorated, leading to its sudden death. A necropsy will be conducted to determine the cause of death.
Fisheries Minister Joanne Thompson expressed sadness over Jelly Bean’s passing and extended condolences to the Spanish aquarium staff. The Canadian government had taken precautionary measures to ensure the safe relocation of the whales, including health assessments and permits.
Two other belugas, Peekachu and Rain, had also died shortly after being moved. The relocation of the belugas from Marineland to various aquariums was initiated due to financial constraints at the park. Animal welfare advocates had raised concerns about the stress and health risks associated with transporting the belugas.
Camille Labchuk, executive director of Animal Justice, warned about the potential dangers of moving the belugas and emphasized the need for transparency in health assessments. Marine mammal scientist Naomi Rose also expressed concerns about the well-being of the belugas during the relocation process.
Despite the challenges and losses, the rescue efforts aimed to provide the belugas with better care and living conditions. Oceanogràfic highlighted the dedicated efforts of the rescue teams and expressed sorrow over Jelly Bean’s passing.
