U.S. President Donald Trump warmly welcomed Xi Jinping this week, praising the Chinese leader as a “remarkable figure” and aiming to enhance or prolong an agreement both nations struck last year to mitigate certain tariffs and establish a trade ceasefire.
Trump has touted his successful trade pacts with Beijing and recently entertained the idea of Chinese automakers setting up manufacturing plants in the U.S., stating, “If China expressed interest in establishing a factory to produce vehicles here, I would support it,” during an appearance on the Fox News show “The Ingraham Angle.” The extension of the deal with China was reportedly finalized late on Wednesday.
However, Trump and several members of his administration have criticized Prime Minister Mark Carney for securing a considerably smaller trade deal. In January, Canada agreed to allow the entry of 49,000 Chinese electric vehicles with a reduced tariff of 6.1 percent (down from 100 percent), while China reciprocated by lowering tariffs on Canadian goods like canola, peas, lobsters, and crabs.
Critics like U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy and Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick have expressed discontent over Canada’s trade decisions, with Lutnick accusing Canada of abandoning the U.S. market in favor of China. He questioned Carney’s move of seeking Chinese trade opportunities over maintaining ties with the U.S., emphasizing the economic strength and consumer influence of the United States.
Jia Wang, a senior fellow at the China Institute at the University of Alberta, highlighted the inconsistency in the U.S.’s approach to trade relationships, pointing out the evident double standards in its demands from trading partners.
In 2025, Canadian-China trade gained momentum as businesses sought diversification amidst U.S. trade tariffs. Despite this, Canada would need to boost its trade with China by over 380 percent to match the volume of imports the U.S. receives annually from China.
Senator Rick Scott, a Florida Republican and supporter of Trump, warned of the risks for Canada in deepening trade ties with China, cautioning against choosing China over the U.S. for trade partnerships.
Amidst these trade dynamics, experts like Mark Manger from the University of Toronto’s Munk School of Global Affairs & Public Policy and Jia Wang highlighted the need for Canada to navigate its relationships with both China and the U.S. strategically, considering the complexities of the world’s two largest economies.
They emphasized the importance of leadership, foresight, and astute decision-making as Canada seeks to balance its trade interests between these economic powerhouses.
