“Siblings’ Memoir Unveils Father’s Untold Grief”

Donna Morrissey had a poignant moment with her siblings one evening, reflecting on their childhood in Newfoundland. Growing up, the sisters were closer to their mother indoors, while the brothers bonded with their father outdoors. This dynamic persisted into adulthood, leading to revelations about their late father’s untold stories.

From this personal exploration emerged Morrissey’s latest book, “Tell It to the Water: Five Siblings Tell of Their Father’s Grief and His Struggle Back to Hope.” The narrative revolves around their father’s grief following their mother’s cancer-related death, interwoven with other tragic events such as the loss of Morrissey’s brother, Ford, in a workplace accident decades ago.

Despite her extensive experience crafting fiction, delving into her family’s memoir exposed Morrissey to raw emotions, evoking tears as she recounted the process. The collaborative effort involved numerous discussions and clarifications among the siblings to capture each individual’s perspective authentically.

While occasional tensions arose during the writing process, Morrissey highlighted that the book fostered a deeper bond among the siblings, emphasizing ongoing healing and shared growth. Reflecting on the family’s tragedies, she expressed a sense of preciousness in their evolving narrative.

Dr. Simon Sherry, a psychologist, discussed the enduring nature of grief and evolving relationships with lost loved ones, underscoring the ongoing emotional attachment as a form of solace. Morrissey hopes her book not only prompts introspection among readers about their own family dynamics but also serves as a model for those contemplating documenting their family history.
