British Chancellor Slams Iran War Ahead of U.S. Meeting

British Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves stood firm in her criticism of the Iran war as “foolish” ahead of her meeting with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other American officials in Washington. Reeves, along with Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne, joined economic leaders gathering in Washington for the spring meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank.

Despite previous praise for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s handling of President Donald Trump, both Starmer and Reeves publicly expressed frustration with the White House. The tensions come as King Charles is set to visit the U.S. at Starmer’s government’s invitation.

In an interview published by the Mirror, Reeves criticized the U.S. for initiating a war that has negatively impacted everyday Britons. The IMF projected that the UK’s economy would be severely impacted by the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran, leading to a downgrade in growth forecasts and an increase in the unemployment rate.

Reeves echoed Starmer’s concerns about rising energy costs due to global events, including actions by leaders like Putin and Trump. The British government’s plan to transfer sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius faced opposition from Trump, labeling the move as “great stupidity.”

Amid criticism and tensions, Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey called for the cancellation of King Charles’ visit to the U.S. Trump’s comments and actions continue to stir controversy, with implications for the upcoming royal visit and ongoing geopolitical developments.
